Clubs are in full swing, virtually, of course

Clubs at Somerville High School are very much underway. The Highlander Theater Company is putting on its “Live at Lunch” series starting next week and is holding regular meetings. The Creative Writing Club/Literary Magazine is looking for writers of any experience level: poets, short story writers, song writers, journalists. All lovers of words are welcome to jump in on Mondays at 3:00. And of course, your faithful school newspaper is up and running; meetings are on Mondays at 2:45, but we accept submissions via email at lbrewster@k12.somerville.ma.us. Remembering Mr. DeSimone

On Tuesday, November 26th, Leo DeSimone, associate principal of Somerville High School passed away, devastating the Somerville community. His funeral was held on Monday, December 2nd at St. John’s in Union Square; Somerville High School was closed to allow staff to attend the service; despite the weather, hundreds came to pay their respects. Ultimate Frisbee Holds Fall Practices

Somerville High Ultimate is back and looking for new members! Fall practices began several weeks ago, led by captains Luca Duclos-Orsello (2020), Daniel Peña (2020), and Peter Novick (2020), but anyone can some. These captains’ practices take place twice a week and include fun drills and scrimmages. During the winter season, captains lead weekly conditioning workouts indoors (literally inside and around the building), which continue into the preseason in March. Once the spring season begins, practices are held daily at the Capuano Field, and home games are played at Dilboy Field.   Read more →

“Tampon tax” is a term that refers to the fact that in most states in the US, tampons are taxed as a luxury item. This tax adds up to 9% to the cost of menstrual hygiene products, depending on the state. This tax is unfair and sexist, and makes these  products harder to access, especially for low income women.
